Valiant Hearts is a video game set in the First World War where players control one of four main characters from Germany, France, Belgium and the United States whose path cross as they move through battlefields and villages. Original letters have inspired the storyline and the gameplay is presented in the style of an animated graphic novel. It falls under the general category of puzzle game where characters fight, hide, help others and collect objects that help them on their quests. The game was released in 10 languages in 2015 to overwhelmingly positive reviews and awards from Games for Change, BAFTA and the Game Awards.
This game is similar to Never Alone, in that informative real-life vignettes are unlocked that provide background knowledge to the scenarios that the the main characters experience as move through challenges in environment. Another interesting element is the inclusion of a companion animal in each game which increases the emotional investment that the game player experiences (again, especially for those who have had family pets). Fritz is a doberman pincher who rescues fallen soldiers but needs to be saved himself at various times in the story.
I was pleased to discover that I could go mobile and play Valiant Hearts on my iPhone and iPad. The game runs on UbiArt Framework and is also available for Android, Windows, Playstation 3 and 4, and Xbox 360 and One.
